Is restless genital syndrome (RGS) a symptom of Parkinson's disease?
Based on available information about Parkinson's symptoms, restless genital syndrome is not commonly recognized as a typical symptom of Parkinson's disease. However, people with Parkinson's can experience restless leg syndrome (RLS), which causes a strong, uncomfortable urge to move the legs, often when lying down to rest.
Studies show that anywhere from 3 percent to 80 percent of people with Parkinson's may have RLS, and it often appears in the early stages of the disease. Both conditions are thought to be related to low dopamine levels in the body.
People with Parkinson's can also experience various sexual difficulties, including:
- Lowered libido
- Difficulty with arousal
- Problems with orgasm
- Discomfort during sex
- Motor symptoms that make physical aspects of sex challenging
If you're experiencing unusual sensations or discomfort, it's important to discuss these symptoms with your doctor. They can help determine whether what you're experiencing is related to Parkinson's, medications, or another condition, and work with you on appropriate treatment options.
