Members rallied around the question of mouth tremors and teeth chattering after eating with Parkinson's, sharing that choking, difficulty chewing, loss of appetite, and changes in taste and smell are common experiences many had not expected. Several members described helpful steps like speech therapy, barium swallow tests, journaling symptoms before neurologist visits, and using nutritional supplement drinks to maintain weight. A recurring theme was the importance of seeing a neurologist to find the right cause and treatment, while leaning on the community for emotional support and encouragement.

Please do not assume you are stuck with this. If Parkinson’s or a Parkinson’s medication is causing the mouth or jaw movements, there may be ways to reduce them or possibly stop them.

A neurologist can determine whether it is a Parkinson’s tremor, medication wearing off, dyskinesia from too much medication at one time, or a different jaw problem. Depending on the cause, treatment might involve adjusting the dose or timing of medication, trying another medicine, or occasionally using targeted injections.

Please do not change your medication or try to figure this out on your own—or through people on this site. We can share experiences and support, but none of us can see exactly what your body is doing or know what treatment you need. Please talk with your neurologist. Getting the right answer may help the symptoms and remove a lot of the stress.

Wow I never thought that was a symptom of Parkinson's I have been going through the same thing I choke a lot when eating I'm in speech therapy to help with my throat muscles I go for a barium swallow test in a few days to see what's going on with my throat I have an appointment with my neurologist in a couple of days and I will mention this to him and Kathleen I know how scary all this is I was diagnosed in 2024 by my neurologist but he never told me anything about the disease he just prescribed me medicine and adjusted it until it worked for me that's why I joined this group to learn more about the disease and it has been very helpful and you get a lot of support from other members just take it one day at a time and start journaling about new symptoms you have so when you see your neurologist you know exactly what to talk to him about and the same for you Russell it really helps

My appetite has diminished so I have lost approximately 80lbs but I needed to lose some I just don't want to go too far with it. Unfortunately I don't enjoy certain foods like I used too

"Loss of smell also creates safety concerns. Check expiration dates carefully, label leftovers, and make sure smoke and gas detectors work because you may not smell spoiled food, smoke, or leaking gas."

Good point Albert...I worry about this a LOT. I could probably down a pint of off milk or similar and not notice.
