Members responded to a question about sudden hair loss and Parkinson's, with many agreeing it is likely not a direct symptom but could be linked to stress, medications, thyroid issues, nutritional deficiencies, or heredity. Several members shared personal experiences, including one who noticed hair loss tied to changes in Rytary dosage and another who pointed to family history of hair thinning. A recurring theme was trying gentle hair care and castor oil on the scalp, along with encouragement to consult a doctor or dermatologist to find the true cause.

The first thing I would do is check with your doctor. Hair loss is not generally considered a typical symptom of Parkinson’s itself.

However, excessive physical or emotional stress can cause temporary hair shedding. The American Academy of Dermatology says this is called telogen effluvium. It often begins a few months after a stressful event, serious illness, surgery, fever, or major weight loss. Continued stress can sometimes make the shedding last longer.

There are many other possible causes, including heredity, thyroid problems, low iron, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, weight loss, illness, or certain medications. A doctor or dermatologist can help determine what is actually causing it.

Please check with your doctor.

Another possibility is weight loss. Losing weight quickly can cause hair loss.

Hair loss is not a recognized symptom of Parkinson's disease itself. Hair loss is not a recognized symptom of Parkinson's disease itself. However, it's worth knowing that some medications used to treat Parkinson's can occasionally have unexpected side effects, so it's always worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist about any new physical changes after starting or adjusting medications.

Since sudden hair loss can have several causes, it's really important to bring this up with your doctor as soon as possible. They can help figure out what's going on and recommend the right next steps.

Don't ignore it — sudden hair loss in handfuls is worth a prompt conversation with your healthcare provider!

Yes, castor oil is skin and hair magic!! The process is a little exhausting and feels weird (like massaging a turkey for the oven, lol) but so worth it!! Added quick fix benefit is a little extra in belly button aids digestion!!

My wife and I Both have slowed or stopped hair loss by applying caster oil directly to the scalp a couple of times a week. It is also very useful if you have dry skin.
I am an 83 year old man with PD (I am in my 14th year since being diagnosed.) My wife is my life partner. We both use caster oil for skin issues.
