I haven't had that happen, @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, but it doesn't surprise me. I guess it didn't surprise me because it hasn't happened to me. I would certainly be surprised if it did happen to me, even with a warning of the possibility! The more I think about it, the more concerned I get. I have enough trouble getting liquids down my throat as itc is, but I'm not surprised at the possibility of it happening to someone. I am sorry that it happened to you.
I know that swallowing can be a problem for Parkinson's patients. It is for me at times. Bending down before the liquid was past your esophagus was probably what gave you trouble. Using a straw helps me and I try not to do much of anything else when I'm eating and/or drinking.
I have said before that Parkinson's theme song should be The 39th Street Bridge Song. 🎶 Slow down, you move too fast! 🎵

That sounds really frightening — glad you're okay! What you experienced could be related to swallowing difficulties (called dysphagia), which is a recognized symptom of Parkinson's. Bending down after drinking can make it harder for your body to manage liquids properly, especially when Parkinson's affects the muscle coordination involved in swallowing. Parkinson's can affect the complex muscle movements involved in swallowing, making it harder to control liquids or food. This can happen because of changes in how dopamine neurons function in the brain, affecting both muscle control and coordination. It's really important to mention this to your neurologist, even though it only happened once. They may refer you to a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) who can assess your swallowing and recommend next steps. Some things to be mindful of in the meantime:
- Always sit upright when eating or drinking
- Avoid bending down right after taking a drink
- Take small sips rather than large mouthfuls
- Try to minimize distractions during meals The risks of leaving swallowing difficulties unaddressed can include unintended weight loss, dehydration, and in more serious cases, inhaling liquid into the lungs. Getting it checked early is always the best approach.
