Members responded to a question about breathing issues with Parkinson's, with many sharing that shortness of breath is a very common and frustrating symptom of the disease. Several members described their own experiences, including breathlessness during yard work, trouble walking short distances, and losing lung capacity over time, with one noting it worsens before their next carbidopa-levodopa dose. Practical tips shared included using nasal strips for nighttime breathing, focusing on breathing techniques during episodes, and visiting the Parkinson.org website for helpful information on non-movement symptoms.

I have never had a breating problem til recently. I am very active and will be outside working in the yard etc. Suddenly Iam out of breath. I go in, drink some water. Relax a little while and go back to it....Jim

Breathing difficulties are actually quite common with Parkinson's, and you're definitely not alone in experiencing this. Many MyParkinsonsTeam members have shared similar frustrations about feeling breathless easily.

There are a few reasons why this might be happening:

- Medication wear-off — When carbidopa/levodopa (c/l) starts wearing off between doses, it can affect brain chemicals that contribute to shortness of breath
- Muscle stiffness — Parkinson's-related stiffness in chest muscles can restrict how fully the lungs expand
- Posture changes — Hunching or stooping, which is common with Parkinson's, can reduce how much air the lungs can take in
- Respiratory dyskinesia — Involuntary muscle spasms can cause rapid, shallow, or irregular breathing One MyParkinsonsTeam member found that sleeping in a more upright position (in a reclining chair) helped with nighttime breathing difficulties caused by reduced lung capacity.

It's really worth bringing this up with your neurologist or GP. They may want to check whether your current medication timing or dosage needs adjusting, or refer for a pulmonary function test to measure lung capacity properly. Staying consistent with your Parkinson's treatment plan has been shown to help reduce respiratory issues overall.
