HI Jenn, @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member
I have osteoarthritis and really started effecting me when I hit mid 40's, where as I was always achy, especially in my knee joints and caused a lot of overall stiffness... I started then with non prescription meds, and graduated to hard core prescription type meds along with the extreme use of Advil in my 50's.
After several knee procedures, I discovered that both of my knee joints were sluffing off the natural cartilage and just starting bone on bone wear. In mid 50's my left should started hurting really bad and that cortisone injections no longer did any thing....
In retrospect, my Parkinson's started at age of ~50, was when the fatigue and short term memory started coming on bad, along with having to properly manage my anxiety & depression.... constantly. Granted there were several major life changing events all happening within a short period of time, I could not figure out what was happening, and only things that came up was osteoarthritis for pain, but never diagnosed as actual PD until 58...
What I noticed, was in prior years when I took fish / krill / flax oil, along with some joint supplements before, it just didn't seem to work to minimize the arthritic stiffness and pain... Because... as I learned from my older brother was...
I had NOT taken an adequate amount to create a Therapeutics level in my system, along with the new improved types of joint supplements that are more readily absorbed by my system..... I take significantly more then the minimum daily amount suggested by the manufactures, and have found it to work wonders for me....
No, it didn't "rebuild" my knee joint, but I have no achy knee pains, no longer the overall body stiffness, and off prescription meds & my former 4-6 Advil's per day just to get by !
Today I wake up without pain, and go to sleep without constant pain.... and although I can't stand in place for 2-3 hours or walk non-stop for 2-3 miles, I am over joyed not having any pain continuously as before.... YES, I'm a believer in supplements, and I believe they work, but obtaining an adequate Therapeutic Level in your system is the key for success....
So in answering your original question... I treated my overall stiffness & pain as if I was arthritis, and treat my actual PD symptoms with adequate Sinemet & Comtan, that seems to take care of tremors, rigidity, rebound from fatigue, and more stamina... As for my Anxiety, I find Buspar works really well, and for Depression use Effexor XL, that has now side effects and does wonders for me. Hugs, Alan
I think stretch good also.
