We use a wireless door bell. Really inexpensive, runs on batteries, and loud. My husband carries the button in his shirt pocket and can push it anytime he needs to. The chime box is small and portable so I can set it anywhere I need to. This system works well for us.

I use my cell phone to call the home phone, I let it ring twice and hang up. My husband looks at caller ID before he walks upstairs to make sure it is me. The family uses a baby monitorr for my father in law to let his caretakers know that he needs assistance because his tremors are too bad for him to use the phone.

You might consider a cell phone. May have to be one that is easy to use. My husband has trouble knowing which buttons to push. And I didn't connect the PD with his writing. I can hardly read what he writes. He's 73 and just diagnosed this year but I'm sure he's had it for several years.

We use the intercom feature on our cordless house phones. I take one outside with me and if my Mom needs m- she hits the hold button and the number of my phone. Each handset has a number on it and most of them have enough range that you should be able to find one that will work for you. My Mom is 85 and it has been a lifesaver! :)

Thanks all. We have the wireless doorbell, haven't needed to use it yet, but its another layer to our evolving security/dignity balance we are attempting to maintain.
