For the past 3 years, I have noticed this strange chemical-like smell almost like something burnt or metallic. I smell it at different times of the day and in all places. I consulted my ENT and Neurologist about this. No good explanation for it. My Neurologist said a loss of smell can occur. Not sure if it is PD or Parotoid Tumor(Acenic Cell Carcinoma). I had a tumor removed in 2012. This is a minor thing just curious.
I have a diminished sense of smell and taste with PK. Sometimes I smell a chemical smell that no one else can smell.
I believe phantoms smells also called phantosmia are PD related. I started having them about 15 years ago on and off before being diagnosed with PD. I smell burning wax. I think what is happening is the neurons in the brain somehow misfire where some smells are stored. I have not lost my sense of smell yet but I have only been diagnosed for two years.
Before I was diagnosed with PD, I would constantly smell cigarettes. No on e in my household smoked. I did not work around smokers. I even accused my husband of taking his Secretary out to inch because she is a smoker....... The sensation till comes and goes.
Loss of smell is a common system of PD, along with the loss of taste too.
What I smell seems more like smoke.
