Ropinerol Linked To Gambling Obsession?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband is on Ropinerol, azilect, carbodopa and neupro and developed a gambling obsession. We have an appointment with his neurologist next week but need to know if anybody else have these side effects and what course of action you have taken. Are there any other Parkinson drugs that can be used without these damaging side effects?

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member I used to take @ Mirapex. I had lived in Las Vegas for 10 years before I was diagnosed and never gambled. After I started taking his medication I started to gamble, shop online, etc. I told my therapist who had me tell my doctor immediately and he took me off. The drug your husband is on in the one I was on can cause impulse control issues. I wish I had researched it or been honest with myself and Dr. sooner.

Thank you KsWin for your reply. We moved the appointment with the Neurologist for this Saturday and he already decreased medication to 4mg and 2mg to weaning him off. I have been reading about Ropinerole and the side effects and apparently is more frequent in younger males with parkinson. My husband is 56. Thanks again.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member Darr: Yes, there is definitely a connection between Ropinerole and gambling/addictive behaviour. I think it is mentioned in the leaflet enclosed with the drug, though I have stopped reading some of mine so as not to scare myself!

The neurologist will have to advise you on what to do - I did not have a gambling obsession, but got very into my computer, tracing family tree all night without noticing particularly etc/...subtle at first and then growing. The thing is that it is difficult for the patient to see their behaviour objectively when they are in that position. I was weaned off it gradually - to stop strange side effect from abrupt withdrawal as the PD nurse mentioned.

Good luck with your husband. There is info on Ropinerole on the Parkinson's UK website of you are interested of reading brief synopsis of the drugs used, their availability and a summary as to what they are used for, side effects etc.

Ropineral has bad side affects such as gambling, spending unnecessarily and watching porn. Happened to my husband when he was on it. The doctor has now changed his med. Thank God!

My Consultant told me about the gambling also about increased sexual feelings if I were to take Neupro. I have been on it for over 4 years now no side effects - I am on 10 mgs
