It's called freezing. A physical therapist can help you find ways to deal with that. Unfortunately, falling is common with PD.

My husband doesn't freeze but he was falling a lot before he started meds and physical therapy. His issue was festinating, where he would start walking faster and faster in short shuffling steps until he was completely out of control. If he couldn't grab hold of something he would fall.

Helen, I know that was very scary for you. I hate feeling helpless, but I'm not afraid to ask for help. I had a dream and fell out of bed a few months ago. I was tangled in the sheet and couldn't get myself up. Thank God, my husband was still home and he got me up. The worse was the day I wanted to take a soaking bath. I usually shower. I enjoyed my bath until time to get out and I realized I couldn't get myself out. My husband was gone. He got home about 10 minutes later and helped me out. Now if I want to take a bath, I make sure he is here and let him know I am in the tub.

HI, I'm sorry to hear this. It's hard to stop the forward momentum. My husband has some success just stopping when the freeze starts to happen, takes a deep breath, then on the exhale, lifts his one knee then the other in a march. I would definitely use a cane.

you are having freezing and it can cause falling if you are not aware of freezing , it usually occurs when you make sudden shift in direction, when wallking towards an obstacle when turning in small space or walking, You must study when you encounter the freezing and once you are aware you can avoid a fall. I am so aware of this and Iv'e had near falls but averted them because I was aware of what my body was doing.

The number one thing I am always thinking about is falling.I had a bad fall last month and was lucky not to severely injure myself. MY balance is worsening and freezing is getting worse,
