My husband fell and broke his femur. He had surgery and has not been the same since the accident. He became very confused, combative in the rehab and thought I pushed him. It took weeks for him to be less confused. He doesn't remember how he was acting in the rehab. It is always a setback when he has been in the hospital or a rehab. Any type of anesthesia is not good for a Parkinsons patient. I have talked to many people in my support group and they agree.

it was not a heart problem. He has PAD. the bypass was in his leg. artificial vein . could not put stents in his leg

The doc may not know if there is a cause and effect and/or how to manage it. This is a time when I really need someone to advocate for me so I'm not ignored or blamed for behavior I have no control over. I would like to never be in restraints on me, security guards in my room so I don't hurt staff, and being evaluated for a mental illness. The simple answer is my mind hated being flooded with antipsychotic meds. as soon at the anesthesia wore off and I was alert enough to refuse the pain meds, the demon left and Maria returned. Very scary!

Happened to my husband as well. Very frightening for me and my daughter. When I talked to the anesthesia doctor about it he downplayed it. His answer was " We operate on people all the time who have Parkinson's disease". In other words he was telling me no correlation between the two. I beg to differ.

I fell 3 yrs ago from untreated orthostatic hypotension and the anesthesia and post op pain meds made my very aggressive and I have no memory of the 3 days around the fall and surgery. My medical record indicates that I had to be restrained and security was called to assist the aggression. I am humiliated by this as it in no way reflects my personality and I'm grateful to have no memory but I'm scared to death about how anesthesia will affect me in the future.

Once the anesthesia and pain meds wore off a bit, I was able to refuse the narcotics and my brain quickly cleared. I wish my care givers knew more about the potential effects of anesthesia on people with PD because I may have pulled out of that aggressive state more quickly and without security guards if they knew it was caused by the narcotics. I pray this never happens again.
