My husband will be needing a hip replacement soon. He’s still in the ‘mild’ stage, however his doc upped his meds at his last visit and said he wants him working out 7 days a week. His main concern is the healing time as well as the stiffness of his muscles from not being able to workout. Any suggestions or advice from a personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

Talk to your surgeon beforehand to find out what he will be able to do and how soon. With knee replacements, PT starts right away. I assume it is the same with hips. The therapist should be able to guide him in ways he can regain mobility.

What a thoughtful question to ask on your husband's behalf! Hip replacement recovery with Parkinson's does come with some unique considerations, especially around muscle stiffness and maintaining mobility during healing.

A MyParkinsonsTeam member shared some great wisdom: "Listen to your body. Take one day at a time." This is especially relevant during post-surgery recovery, when some days will feel better than others. Regarding muscle stiffness during recovery, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

- Stay hydrated — it helps combat muscle soreness and stiffness
- Gentle stretching — even light stretching within post-op guidelines can help maintain flexibility
- Warm up before any movement — even small, gentle warm-ups before physical therapy sessions matter
- Rest when needed — recovery is not linear, and rest is part of healing

Once cleared by his surgical team, seated exercises can be a great way to stay active during early recovery without putting stress on the hip. It's really important that his surgical team and neurologist communicate closely. Parkinson's medications and their timing can affect recovery, and as one MyParkinsonsTeam member noted, medications can be inconsistent day to day — so patience is key.

Always consult his doctor before resuming any exercise post-surgery, and stop immediately if he feels dizzy or uncomfortable during any activity.
