Freezing of gait is something many people with Parkinson's deal with, and there are some practical strategies that can really help. It's also worth mentioning to your neurologist, as it can sometimes be linked to medication "off" times — when your current dose isn't working as effectively.
Here are some movement tips that MyParkinsonsTeam members and experts suggest:
- Swing both arms while walking to help maintain balance and rhythm
- Walk to a beat — music or a metronome app can reduce freezing episodes
- Lift your feet intentionally, imagining you're stepping over a line or laser on the floor
- Use a "U-turn" strategy when turning — walk in a curved path rather than pivoting suddenly
- Focus on one task at a time and avoid multitasking while moving
- Move slowly when changing positions, like sitting to standing — counting to 15 between movements can help A walking aid like a cane or walker can also make a big difference. As one MyParkinsonsTeam member shared, after giving in to using a walker, their falls decreased and they could walk much longer distances.
Since this has come on over the last two weeks, it's a good idea to flag it with your neurologist sooner rather than later — they may want to review your medication timing or dosage.
