Problem with swallowing

I have hard time swallowing so I build up saliva to the point of having to put my head over the sink.I was told to get a bed that I can raise up so I won't aspirate in the middle of the night I tried botox in the saliva gland and it helped for about 10 weeks I went back at twelve weeks had the shots. but they didn't work so now they want to raise the dosage ..anybody experience this issue

My husband has become an avid gum chewer to constantly keep swallowing. It’s an easy bandaid for now.

I found Sifrol extended release medication the consultant prescribed for med very helpful in controlling this, i take one 1.5 tablet once a day. Be advised by your own specialist there are medications to help

I was already thinking that the "choking on my own saliva" that seems to be happening more frequently is probably yet another fun bonus about PD. Driving to the mall the other day, starting choking on my own spit, and for the first time ever, I got really scared, because I could not get any air. Thankfully, after about ten seconds (I almost pulled over to the side of the road) with a LOT of effort, I finally could draw in a small gasp of air, and it got better from there. My poor kids! I recovered quickly, and we went on our merry way.

I'll add choking to hallucinations as one of the top ten things I am not looking forward to with PD. (Please don't think I am minimizing anyone's troubles, or poking fun at anyone. Gallows humor helps me cope. I realize it's not everyone's coping mechanism. )

so curious that we have similiar problems, thought that my throat cancer had returned because my voice is changing again and am having a difficult time in swallowing AGAIN, did not realize that it could be from my parkinsons, my mouth seems to produce a great deal of saliva which costs me a double swallow hard to get down, and it seems like i have a bubble in the left side of my throat which it has to go around, and it seems that food goes down somewhat easier but i nearly always choke on liquids, and it comes out, very embarassing in front of people, recently in a restaurant stopped in for some lunch tried to swallow some water and caughed and choked and a woman came over and tried to do the heimlick remover on me, very embarassing.sorry about the misspelled words wish that there were a list of potential problems associated with parkinsons d., just found out that my leg pain just also might be associated with p.d. have so many other little problems wish i knew if they could be related, do you know of anything like that?

sorry that you are having problems with swallowing too, keep in touch, nice to know that i am not alone out there, but am very sorry that you are experiencing the nearly same thing. gail

I have a lot of salvia and i choke on it and water. I went to PT and she told me that people with Parkinson’s don’t swallow as much as they use to. She gave me 8 throat exercises to do which some are with a tongue depressor. I haven’t choked for about 4 months,! Thank God....
