people tend top think that you should tilt your head back to help with swallowing, but the opposite is true: tilt your head forward so that your chin is tucked in, and then swallow. I learned this trick from speech therapy. It works!
My husband does have problems chewing and swallowing. I am making more soups,so he could more easily digest. We had a diagnostic test done at at the speech and swallowing disorder center, but I can't remember the name of the test, While they doctor was exploring the swallowing part of his throat with a proble and an I-pad, we could follow along seeing it also on the I-pad. It clearly showed that his swallowing was good and would not cause any aspirations with the lungs. We were so happy to hear that as we were afraid of the possible complications to the lungs.
I was to the point that I got something down my lung. Got pneumonia, had a couple of scans. found a mass. told me I had lung cancer. The lung doctor ho was the last I saw observed that from the MRI to the Pet scan that the mass was slightly smaller and 6 week s later it was gone. I took the swallow test and now am careful tot take small bites and chew really good before swallowing.
I have ti be careful and not swallow too quickly or whatever will "get stuck" or go down the wrong pipe. This happened to me a few years ago and tot make a long story short it lodged in my lung and I had a diagnosis of lung cancer til I saw the lung specialist and he noticed that between aa ct scan and a pet scan the size of the mass decreased. next scan it was gone.
I have trouble with rice and thick bread. I have learned to eat smaller bites, chew slowly, drink more often between bites...
