Why? Different doctors have different methods, so the outcomes can vary.

Jim had a TKR in 2008. Several other family members have had one or two knees replaced. Jim was in bed for a full week (aside from PT once a day) and was on a walker for a month. He was in a great deal of pain. His knee got a lot better, but it has taken years for the pain to entirely go away. OTOH, he was hiking and backpacking again within 6 months. A friend of mine was walking with a cane the day after surgery and doing steps within a week. She now runs half marathons again. My brother had to have several surgeries on the one knee. My SIL had no problems with her double replacement. It varies.

General advice is to strengthen your muscles before the surgery as much as possible. After the surgery, do your PT exercises diligently. You have a fairly small window of time to get full extension back. It is really important to do so, if possible.

“No more .surgeries.” I need two new knees. My orthopedic surgeon says he can do that using a spinal block. I’m checking into that.
