Since swallowing is physically intact, the focus shifts to strategies that can prompt or cue the swallowing reflex cognitively. Here are some approaches worth discussing with his care team: - Verbal cueing — gently and clearly saying "now swallow" at the right moment can help prompt the action
- Timing medications — try giving meds when he is most alert and engaged, not when fatigued
- Liquid consistency — ask the speech therapist if a slightly thickened liquid might help trigger a more automatic swallow response
- Mixing crushed meds into food — if his doctor approves, mixing into a small amount of applesauce or yogurt may make swallowing more automatic since eating is working well
- Reduce distractions — a calm, quiet environment during medication time can help with focus

It's really important to loop in his neurologist about this specific issue. They may be able to suggest alternative medication forms, such as patches, liquids, or dissolvable tablets, that bypass the need to swallow altogether.

A MyParkinsonsTeam member once shared that working closely with both a speech therapist and neurologist together made a big difference in finding the right approach — so that team communication is key here.
